Block Craft

Screen Shot 2016-07-04 at 15.30.05.png

Aim of App:

Craft and grow your own village or build freely in an unlimited open world!

+ Craft anything you like!
+ Fill the world with your creations!
+ Build your village!
+ Help keeping your people happy!

How well it fulfils its aim:

You can make your own buildings but we didn’t find out how to make your people happy because there are just random people wandering around.

Ease of Use:

If you have never used it before the tutorials don’t actually teach you how to play they only teach you how to move. If you have someone who knows how to play then they can help you.

Top Tips for new users:

Tap where the translucent blocks are to place blocks.

Play with someone who has played before.

We really enjoyed playing this app – however we struggled to find any educational purpose to it.

30 Hands

Screen Shot 2016-05-16 at 15.34.32.png

Aims of the App:

30hands Storyteller is the easiest way to tell a story, explain a concept or flip a classroom. Create a multimedia presentation in minutes and publish it as a video to share. We designed the tool to be simple and fast, so it takes backseat to learning and expression. In a single class period, students can complete a video activity. Mapping these activities to a longer project helps students make PBL projects authentic and fun.

Whether you are in Kindergarten or College, 30hands Storyteller helps you learn better by following UDL principles and getting you to think and create iteratively.

How well it achieves it’s aims:

We think it achieves it’s aim in that you can create quick presentations with a voice over and notes. You are able to include text, drawings and photos.

Ease of use:

Quite a few pieces of work were accidentaly deleted so maybe it needs to be harder to delete your work. For example have password protected work.

You were not able to draw and voice record at the same time which made it more difficult to identify particular points on your slide.

Top Tips for new users:

  • Be careful not to delete your work.
  • It isn’t clear how to add a new slide – use the symbol in the top right corner that looks like an export button.

We think this app is fine but we think that other apps like Explain Everything may be better. We are giving this app 7/10 as it is fine but it didn’t wow us! Maybe we need to think of some more creative ways to use the app to make it worth getting.

Popplet

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 15.57.44.png

Aim of the App:

Popplet is the simplest tool to capture and organize your ideas. With Popplet you can quickly jot down your ideas and sort them visually. Popplet is great for school and for learning in the classroom and at home. Students use Popplet to think and learn visually. By capturing facts, thoughts, and images, students learn to create relationships between them and generate new ideas.

Popplet is also great for work and for generating ideas in the office or on the go. Professionals use Popplet to generate ideas and plan projects. By brainstorming visually or jotting down notes, Popplet helps professionals organize their thoughts and generate their next big idea.

How well it fulfils its aim:

It does this really well. It enables you to organise and record ideas quickly and easily.

Ease of use:

This app is really easy and you don’t really need to be taught much to use it.

Top Tips for new users:

  • Colour code different branches of ideas to help you find information later.
  • Include photos as well as typing to speed up the process or for younger pupils.

Our score would be 8.5/10. We love this app as it does exactly what it says it will and is very easy to use. To improve we would like the app to include a video and voice recording option to increase the scope of use.

Does it meet it’s aim:

If you know the app well you can create impressive presentations.

Ease of use:

We feel that you really need to be taught how to use this app because you can’t just pick it up and know how to use it or even what it could possibly do. Once you have learnt how to use it, it is then easy to create things.

Top Tips for new users:

Find someone who knows how to use keynote really well to teach you how to do it.

We would give this 9/10 because we feel that there could be improvements made for example we would suggest some templates for different types of presentation such as a quiz.

Epic Citadel

Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 15.45.55.png

Aim of the App:

Enter Epic Citadel, the dynamic fantasy setting of the award-winning Infinity Blade.

From the circus bazaar to the sweeping cathedral in the center of town, Epic Citadel dazzles with a visual parade of special effects, as only imagined by Epic Games and powered by the critically acclaimed Unreal Engine 3.

Are you ready to explore the realm of the Epic Citadel and all the beautiful secrets it holds?

Epic Citadel was created using the same tools and technology used to develop high-end console games, now delivered for iOS devices!

How well it achieves its aim:

This app has outstanding graphics and is pretty breathtaking at times. It is really interesting to explore the castle but it is frustrating that there are doorways that you cannot move through.

It looks like it is real but you cannot do anything other than move around. Although we are happy with the idea of it not being a game we do feel that it needs some element of activity or challenge as you move through the city. This could be as simple as finding ways to open locked doors.

Ease of use:

We all found it really easy to use. However if you don’t normally play games you may find you walk into walls a lot at first.

Top Tips for new users:

There isn’t really an objective so there arn’t really any top tips.

We would give this app 5/10. We loved the graphics and moving around the app but it is difficult to see what purpose it could hold for school other than as an inspiration to writing but then it doesn’t do a huge amount more than a picture would.

* Choose from portrait, landscape or square book sizes
* Add super powers to your books with comic templates, stickers and styles

How well it achieves its aim:

We feel that Book Creator achieves each of the aims it has set itself very well.

Ease of Use:

It is very easy to use and the buttons are easy to read or made with symbols.

Top tips for new users:

  • We created a maths book all about shape.
  • We created history books all about famous people.
  • We created story books with videos and voice recordings.
  • We created a science experiement log with videos and results tables.
  • We created a geography book all about Flitch Green.
  • Add a soundtrack from your music folder.

We would give this app 9.9/10 this is because although we couldn’t think of anything that could be improved – we are sure there must be something!

Garageband

Screen Shot 2016-03-07 at 16.02.04.png

Aim of the App:

GarageBand turns your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch into a collection of Touch Instruments and a full-featured recording studio — so you can make music anywhere you go. And now Live Loops makes it easy for anyone to have fun creating music like a DJ, by triggering loops and audio effects in real time. Use Multi-Touch gestures to play a piano, organ, guitar, and drums. They sound and play like their counterparts, but let you do things you could never do on a real instrument. Enjoy Smart Instruments that make you sound like a pro — even if you’ve never played a note before. Plug an electric guitar or bass into your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and play through classic amps and stompbox effects. Use a Touch Instrument, a built-in microphone, or a guitar and instantly record a performance with support for up of 32 tracks.

How well does it fulfil it’s aim:

We think it matches up to what it says it can do very well. We use this app for a range of lessons and find it easy and enjoyable.

Ease of use:

It is easy to use the basic functions although there is also opportunity to learn more functions and get more out of the app.

Top Tips for New Users:

  • Use in music lessons if you do not have enough instruments for all pupils
  • Use to learn about new types of music and copy their style
  • Create your own songs for performances
  • Use to create the sountrack for a movie or advert
  • Make a soundscape of something e.g. the seaside
  • Add sound effects to a drama lesson/performance
  • Record voice overs for an animation

We would give this app 9.5/10 only because you have to pay for it. We love Garageband.
